New York

Start with the exact office and the journeys you would make each week. A New York label covers several boroughs and very different routes; a city guide should help you ask better questions about the particular role.

JFK rail access involves an AirTrain connection

MTA's JFK guide describes subway-plus-AirTrain and LIRR-plus-AirTrain options. LIRR passengers connect at Jamaica; subway options connect at Jamaica or Howard Beach. The correct route depends on the starting point and service on the day.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Use the current firm directory, not a cached address

Bain's current New York office page lists 335 Madison Avenue and describes its Midtown location beside Grand Central Terminal.

Questions to take into a coffee chat

Use one that matches what you want to learn. These are suggested questions, not statements from employees or claims about office culture.

  • Which office or client locations shape your week most, and what would that mean for a new joiner's commute?

  • What surprised you about living here once you started the job?

  • Do you have a neighbourhood routine or summer event you would recommend to someone deciding whether the city suits them?

Ask a follow-up about the person’s own experience, and check whether it applies to your target office and role.
